FYI- I don’t like Tennis. Not as much as some of the other people do. So for those “some” people, this post might be a little rude, offensive. My apologies to them in advance. I’m not liable to any acquistion if you choose to read further.
So there was this tritely [in]famous final between these two giants of lawn tennis, for the umpteenth number of time! Had Federar won, the papparazi would have again showered condolences on Nadal, empathizing with him like hell.. Big Deal! The repercussions, in that case wouldn’t have been as stirring as they are now. They say that it’s ‘an end of era’, ‘a new dawn of hope’ and all those clichés. I say it’s nothing. Just a win doesn’t prooves anyone’s mettle. India beating Australia in that final of triangular series down under didn’t make India the better team than Australia. It was just the matter of “that” day. It was India’s. Like it was of Nadal’s.
When a Tennis Match goes up to 5 sets, it’s really unfair to decide a winner. Then, the luck factor comes into play as well. Remember, Goran Ivanisevic? Beating Rafter in what was called a marathon game. And the final set of it? This game was no different than the present one, as for the sheer determination of both the winners. The only difference (which overshadows everything else, sadly) being that Ivanisevic wasn’t as well known as then as Nadal is now.
This doesn’t mean that I’m pro-Federar or something. I support no one, as I aforementioned. But definitely, Radal’s win is kind of change from monopoly (and monotony) of Federar. All in all, it is good for Tennis.
Here is why I don’t like Tennis. I don’t like it because I never played it. Hence, I can’t appreciate the finesse, nuances, the technique of the game. For me, [mostly] tennis is like a foreign film, with no subtitles. And this goes for every game on which I never had a first hand experience. I only started liking football once I started playing it. The better I got at it, the more I enjoyed watching it. I don’t know what it takes to hit a perfect ace. I don’t know how much practice it takes to win a point from baseline. I don’t know the strategies of net game, of hitting volleys. All this, despite the fact that I’ve played Badminton professionally, which isn’t much different than tennis, theoretically.
And here is why I don’t like tennis even more. Of all the Tennis-Crazy people, I believe almost 80 % have never seen a tennis racquet in real life. And yet, they go ‘Go-FedEx’. What the hell! Do they even know how much stamina it takes to run up-and-down court infinite number of times? To hit just that one ace, do they have any bit of idea how much he or she has worked over it? Backhand doesn’t come naturally to many. Have they ever seen Gustavo Kuerton’s powerful backhands? I’ll consider anyone a die-hard tennis fan if he/she can answer all the above questions in affirmative, and perhaps point out my mistake which I’m sure have made. Coz I’m not a fan of tennis, I can’t answer most of them in affirmative with conviction. This is what it takes to be a fan.
What deserve to be done, deserves to Overdone. - Harry Crews.
I might sound too strong in my opinions, but I’m not. All I wanted to say here is that don’t make a charade of you being ultimate tennis fanatic. Coz if you really are, you definitely wont. And don’t get too hyper over one Federar loss or Radal’s win.
I don’t have much knowledge on tennis, so it’s still Love-All for me. Which, by the way, is a very useful maxim to be followed otherwise

First of all..I do not like Federer because he always beats Roddick (except for probably once or twice)

But jokes apart I wanted Federer to win cause then he would have won the Wimbledon for the sixth consecutive time.. that’s some achievement now!
It takes an obnoxious amout of stamina to run up and down the court, another obnoxiously annoying amount of strength to hit the ball from the end of one court to the other and a hell lot of practice to hit aces..Tennis is amazingly tiring..phew!
But my backhand was always better than my forehand..
I just wish I was a little more serious about ‘the’ game I used to play and liked..
First thing..I hate it soo much when people draw conclusions out of nowhere..damn it dude..secondly, where the hell is it mentioned that 80% of the people who go GO FeDEx dont know anything about tennis?
Third..it wont have been a monopoly had Nadal lost The French Open for a change..or, Federer had one atleast one grandslam this year..Ofcourse things HAVE to be overdone…they would have been overdone had Federer won the Wimbledon for the sixth consecutive year beating Byon Borg’s record..and not equalling it..THAT would have been something..Nadal could have won the next time man..Now it will take another Federer another five wimbledon matches to achieve this byyyg byyyg thing..
Neway, I hate Nadal..
And dont care what others think about it..everybody has their favourites..we never say Rahul Dravid sucks or something infront of his DIEHARD fans..beh.
Im v.v.bad!![:-D]
may be you should change that good fellas thing and put my name in bad fellows instead!:P
..and I forgot to mention this point but I completely agree with you about the fact that 80% of the people who say Go-FedEx would have never seen tennis racquet in real life..or just in case they did am sure they would not know how to play ‘play’ the game!
@ Nandi
It might have been (the achievement) but I really don’t care about that!
And I’ve a little bit of idea of what you’re saying, I did play it once [I think I already told you that].. It is tiring, but it is definitely one if the best forms of exercising.
Even I wish you were a little more serious about it! As far as I know, you were good at it.
@ Prachi

) ever done to you that you want his record to be broken so desperately? Probably even more desperately than Federar himself!
Hmm.. so I suppose you fall into that 80 % lot. I’ll repeat what I said right in the beginning that I’m not liable to any accusations if your choose to read further.
Apparently, you ignored it!
So, firstly.. I’m not drawing any conclusions. Thats just what I think. I might be wrong. I might be right. What we have here is a difference of opinion scenario, which isn’t a big deal.. So no need to “damn” me for it
Secondly, again.. I can be right I can be wrong. Thats just my very personally unadulterated point of view. I see you’re having one of your own, which isn’t same as mine. So? :-O
Thirdly, you didn’t see my point. It seems you were just stuck up with the word ‘monopoly’. Neither did you got the connection between the quote and the rest of the thing in the way I intended it to be. You hate Nadal. Fine. You adulate Federar, even more Fine. But what have Bjorn Borg (as for a “die-hard” tennis fan, not so much with the names of past legends, now this is unacceptable
And even if he had, why do WE (We, as in the Indians) care so much? How many of us did actually follow Sania’s game in this GrandSlam? Till which round did she make? I honestly don’t know. A die hard fan of tennis should be able to answer this one without googling it out. Probably, my definition of a “Die-Hard Fan” is way more different than the rest of us.
Lastly, you’re totally independent to say anything about anyone on your blog. So am I, on my blog.
Boy, am I Badder or what!
Ahem..lol..Im a state level tennis player..
The spelling thing..this comment was not typed by me..I was juss dictating it..complain about this to the person who made this mistake..who, unfortunately, does not understand even the T of this OH-So noble game..
And neway sure this is ‘your’ blog..you can say whatever you like but because ‘we’ are supposed to comment we will say what we like..
I dint mean a fighting there..the problem is you dont get to know the proper tone of the people in these comments leading to misunderstandings..for instance, you are sounding like a total despo in your comment up there..somebody who would kill to prove his point..I might be sounding the same to you..
As for that quote, feel that you were not able to pass on your thoughts properly to ’some’ of your readers..May be, that ’some’ is a bit more dumb than you thought!!!
Also, if India doesnt play any other sport than cricket what are we supposed to do?Why the hell do you enjoy watching football matches???You must be having your fav in that game..Neway I hated it equally when Germany lost..both the Euro cup this time and the World Cup againt Brazil..big deal it was then for me..
And how the hell do you know how desperate Federer was to win the Wimbledon..may be you havent tasted defeat ever in your life or wanted something to the extent of paasion that ur making such a comment..
*any sport other then cricket
Beh..dunno what I said up there..
Sorry..I dont wanna have a fight!
Neway it was a breathtaking match and Nadal clearly stood out from the very first set..I feel both should have shared the trophy at the podium. So flawless was the script, so breathtaking every single moment of play, so terrific the duel, so awesome the effect of it all.
But for a Federer fan. it was a heartbreaker..
@ Nandi
That, exactly was my point
@ Prachi
.. The world is full of outrageously cynical people like me.
I agree to every word you say! You didn’t type it but dictated it. My problem is that I don’t get to know the proper tone of the people in these comments leading to misunderstandings. I’m a total despo, would kill anyone to proove my point. I’m not able to pass on my thoughts to readers properly, probably I don’t write “that” well. And India absolutely do NOT play any sport other than cricket, why didn’t it struck me earlier? Silly me!
Nevermind
Thank you!!..i agree with your views, you know, how it’s unfair to call it the end of an era and so on and so forth
But one thing that caught my eye in this post was the fact that you say 80% of the tennis-crazy people have never picked up a racqet. Well, I’m one of them (I mean I HAVE picked up a raquet but dont really play the game), but I really have to say that I dont think that should be any deterrant from appreciating the game. No one really thinks its easy to win or anything, and though we mourn Federer’s loss, we know it’s no child’s play and we always commend players for their efforts. It isn’t blind cheering, what we do.
Just throwing in justifications
I like this post.
Since I’ve played tennis. So.
@ wild iris
I totally understand. You don’t need to justify anything to anyone. Not to me, at the least!
@ Nids
So you could have said more, since you’ve played tennis.
